"Track Computing in the Clouds: Cloud and Grid for Data- and Compute-Intensive Applications: User Demand and Research Challenges";
Talk: 5th Summer School on Service Oriented Computing, Hersonissos, Crete, Greece (invited); 06-27-2011 - 07-03-2011.

English abstract:
Fundamentally, both Grid and cloud computing models offer many facilities, in terms
of resources, data storage and software services, for the user to execute data- and
compute-intensive applications. However, there are several differences when we
consider user demands in using them for scientific and commercial data- and
compute-intensive applications. On the one hand, the user must consider such
differences in order to correctly utilize Grid and Cloud computing systems. On the
other hand, Grids and Clouds have to address user demand to attract users and to
simplify user's tasks. Specially, in this talk we will present some challenges for cloud
computing systems in supporting user demands for such applications. We will present
examples from different domains, including scientific computing, remote sensing,
and sustainability governance.
